Background of the Study:
Regional integration initiatives, such as those spearheaded by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), have become critical in shaping foreign policy dynamics. While integration can lead to enhanced cooperation, it may also constrain a nation’s foreign policy autonomy. In Abuja, ECOWAS initiatives have facilitated economic, political, and security collaboration among member states, influencing Nigeria’s international posture (Adegbite, 2023). This study examines how these regional efforts impact Nigeria’s ability to independently formulate and execute foreign policy. It assesses the benefits of collective bargaining and shared security frameworks, alongside the potential limitations imposed by supranational obligations. The research draws on policy analysis, interviews with diplomatic officials, and comparative studies to evaluate the extent to which ECOWAS integration affects national decision-making. The findings will provide a nuanced understanding of the trade-offs between regional solidarity and national sovereignty in the realm of foreign policy (Martinez, 2024).
Statement of the problem:
While ECOWAS has promoted regional unity, concerns persist that it may limit Nigeria’s foreign policy autonomy by imposing collective constraints. Divergent national interests and rigid policy frameworks sometimes force Nigeria to conform to regional positions even when they conflict with its national interests (Ibrahim, 2023). This study seeks to evaluate these tensions and propose ways to balance regional integration with national decision-making freedom.
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the impact of ECOWAS initiatives on Nigeria’s foreign policy autonomy.
To identify areas where regional integration constrains national decision-making.
To recommend strategies for preserving national autonomy while benefiting from regional cooperation.
Research questions:
How do ECOWAS initiatives influence Nigeria’s foreign policy autonomy?
What are the primary constraints imposed by regional integration?
How can Nigeria balance regional commitments with independent policymaking?
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it explores the delicate balance between regional integration and national sovereignty. The findings will inform policymakers on how to optimize foreign policy strategies while engaging in regional alliances, thereby enhancing Nigeria’s international standing (Nguyen, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
